about

Well, this song's history is actually pretty simple. As we were plugging along, we had one original and a few uniquely arranged songs. Gonzo, Neil, and Producer Matt felt we needed sort of a traditional sounding Irishy song, much like you hear from the awesome work of Donal Lunny, Capercaille, Coofin, and yes, even Riverdance. Gonzo also had several references from incredible Irish/Latin group, Gaelica (based in Venezuela). We were also playing Shipping Up to Boston at that time-- a great crowd-pleaser for any fan of Irish music. So one day, we went out on Gonzo's porch and just starting humming ideas, rhythms, etc., it didn't take too long-- you can hear Giles humming and Gonzo banging on something and Neil trying out some ideas-- much of which sound like the Slip Jig the Butterfly. Neil took the recording home and developed the melody line for what we know as Irish Rock Song. This closely follows the Irish format for a jig-- it's basically 2 songs together. You have an A part of the "first" jig, repeated. Then the B part, repeated again. The A part and B part (with repeats) are played three times. Then it's on to the second part, essentially another jig, this time in a major key where you can hear the unique violin melody Gonzo came up with . Again, A part repeated, B part repeated, three times. We throw in a face-melting guitar solo from Cory (hat tip, Jack Black, School of Rock), and conclude with our awesome saxophonist Brian who takes us home. After we're done playing this live, and we do it well, our adrenaline's surely up. What's the origin of "#4" you ask? Beats us ...
