Silver Spear/Maid Behind the Bar was one of our very first tunes. After Neil & Gonzo decided to embark on this ... well, we had no idea what at the time, rehearsals were in Gonzo's living room with just a few of us-- Neil, Gonzo, Gerald, and Camilo. Gonzo resurrected his violin chops from when he was a kid playing in El Sistema orchestra in Venezuela-- some group for prodigies down there or something, at least that's how he tells it. Neil was developing his tin whistle chops at the 4ps Irish music session in Falls Church om Monday nights along with Guinness and 1/2 price burgers. Silver Spear and Maid Behind the Bar were two reels he enjoyed playing which Gonzo also liked and was willing to learn. Add guitar and congas, and we were off (we actually have early recordings of what we sounded like back then, but we'll spare you that trauma). What really makes the song was Gonzo's idea to use a reggaeton beat for this song making it quite danceable, we have found, at our gigs. Then came lyrics, a bass player, and a full drum set which turned into what you hear. On the recording, Producer Matt added effects to the Maid Behind the Bar melody, as well as the awesome ambient sounds at the end (Matt is very ambient). Also, as you can probably tell, the beginning sounds like the first player walking out, taking out his ax, then starting up, while the second player does the same a tad later arriving, of course, on "Irish time" (which we found out is quite a bit earlier than "Latin time.") When we call this up at our gigs, we usually tell Gonzo, "your favorite song" since he plays the violin part around his house like 50x a day. Enjoy!
lyrics
1
Oye mamita tú vas a ser
Tú vas a ser mi maid behind the bar
Con mi Silver Spear te voy a tocar
Y tú, y tú me vas a amar.
2
Sabes que me meto
Sabes que me muevo
Me voy metiendo como culebrero
Tienes calor y es por mi deseo
Pa' la magia que yo traigo
Tú no tienes remedio
En tu cabeza, por dentro de tu cuerpo
Mi brujería va surtiendo efecto
Siente el pregón, que así está la cosa
¡Oye mi Lanza de Plata es bien peligrosa!

Bagpipes, violin, and a fat horn sound on top of a solid, funky groove. What's not to love? Background parts on Isle of Skye Reel are awesome, as are the Paul Simon-style vocals on Carry It On. La Unica
